Type of Government's Afghanistan had since its Independence
Monarchy (1921- July 1973)
From 1921- 1973 The Government was a Monarchy with several rulers who were eventually killed.
After independence, from 1926-1929 the ruler of Afghanistan- King Amanullah
After King Amanullah, from 1929-1933; The ruler of Afghanistan- King Muhammad Nadir Shah
After him was his son King Muhammad Zahir Shah who ruled from 1933- 1973, he was not assassinated, nor died of old age. He just changed the government from a monarchy to a democracy.

50 Member Council (1978- 1994)
After Kabul was captured the guerrilla alliances made a new government made up of 50 council members, they made Burhanuddin Rabbani named interim president of the new government. Then next thing you know the forces of the guerrilla leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar launched attacks on the new government.
The Taliban's (1994- 2001)
An Pashtun Islamic fundamentalist students; the Taliban, who gradually took over Afghanistan by taking over Kabul from the 50 member council. The president of this group in 2001 was Mullah Muhammad Omar.

Deomcracy (2002-today)
After Mullah Muhammad Omar was no longer leader, the Taliban ruling was over. The people of Afghanistan elected Hamid Karzai as president of Afghanistan in October of 2009. It was their first time to ever vote for their authority. He is the current leader of Afghanistan and has been running the country for five years.
Important leaders of Afghanistan
Muhammad Zahir Shah was named father of the nation because he cam back from the exile and convened a traditional Afghan grand council. He was the last king ever to rule Afghanistan, he died in 2007.
